Snapshot, Sydney

A mysterious Romanesque meets Moorish (?) building I had no time to investigate more fully, in Chippendale on Lee St (I think). Sydneysiders may know more, you can see the back of it as you come into Central on the train.

  1. Pretty sure that's what's noted here as Regent St Station. As best I recall, that's a funeral chapel-come-station from the days when bodies were taken direct to Rookwood cemetery by train.

  2. Certain of it. If you click the little marker on 'Regent st station' you get photo and wiki link. Hm. They don't have pics from the other side. I remember it mostly because it's got this great platform garden that you see passing on the train coming/going from the south to/from the city. I always wondered who took care of it.

  3. Yep, it used to be called mortuary station. Can be hired for weddings, parties etc.

  5. I've always loved this building. I'm not certain, but I did see a book which mentioned this building as being one of the first buildings in Australia to have a female involved in its design. J.v posted something on Walking Melbourne about this a few years back. http://www.walkingmelbourne.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=4371
It is definitely free gothic and it is unique and beautiful.
